ProRail is testing new furniture at the railway stations Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA and Leiden Central. Travelers will be interviewed about the new equipment and all items will be tested on functional aspects such as sustainability, management and maintenance.
Basic view on the pilot objects is that they appear friendly and inviting. This means generous dimensions, warm colors and materials and more transparency.
Train travelers may choose from different seating objects during their stay. Comfortably with wood-clad banks offer ample space for side by side seating. Further on the platform a playful group off small concrete seating elements accommodates a more informal way of sitting.
A wind shield offers wind protection and lightens up in the afternoon by the use of colored Led light. Newspapers can be found in a system of linked units. A pattern of little holes, saved in the steel construction shows the word 'news'.
Two 'pavilions' offer optimal acclimatized space for both waiting facilities and commerce. The minimal use of constructive elements provides maximum transparency. Platforms, traveling public and exhibited products are clearly visible.
At Leiden new platform tiles are being tested. They are produced out of self compacting concrete in a warm gray color. A playful pattern offers a visual attractive and functional relief. Green is an integral part of the railway station interior, also on the platforms. At Leiden, three green islands are realized and offer extra seating space. They are planted with Cornus trees, grass and bulbs and show every season a different picture. Others items to be tested are new lampposts, LED lit time tables and dynamic billboards.
The designs of Blom & Moors are developed in collaboration with various designers and manufacturers.
