Leiden Central Station (1996, architect: Harry Reijnders) is an experimental station (http://www.mijnproefstation.nl/) for many changes in the future. The concourse and passage have recently been renovated. In the passage the newspaper bins have been replaced with stainless steel newsstand furniture. The bold shapes and freshness of both the modern white roofing structure as well as the new layout of the concourse have been continued towards the platforms. Through a rhythmical and symmetrical arrangement of furniture and the application of cool colours, the platform has also been given a clear and fresh image.

The platform has been provided with new warm, grey, paving tiles measuring 15 X 30 cm, which emphasize the broadness of this long platform. This contains two groups of comfortable benches which have a light wood-tinted finish. Subtle accent lighting above the benches also makes the place attractive in the evenings. The Kiosk is positioned in a transparent glass pavilion which provides an optimum view on the products. The second pavilion offers an air-conditioned place and waiting area for waiting travellers.
Further along the platform a group of small seating elements, concrete poufs, have been placed which have a glossy silver-grey coating. On the narrow end of the platform there are three green islands which have been provided with a seating edge. Here travellers can sit around in the sun to enjoy the seasonal plants. The islands are planted with Cornusses, waiving grasses and white bulbous plants which flower in Spring ans Summer. In Autumn and Winter, the sophisticated silhouettes of the trees and grasses will dominate the image.

At Leiden Central Station ProRail is also undertaking an experiment with SpoorTV (http://www.spoortv.nl/) screens above the benches.
